Earth My Body, 2022

Graphite, earth and Dutch metal leaf on cotton rag paper
140 pieces 15cm x 15cm each

The pieces in this work were originally a single large drawing, made in response to dancers' bodies in motion and my own movement over the paper on the ground. The drawing was then torn into pieces and covered with a wash of clay found in the local landscape. Following this, golden Dutch metal leaf was applied through a durational process at the VCA Stables Studio building, where the final work was installed. The process was influenced by the architecture and light of the environment, the graphite line-work of the drawing, and my own shifting physical and psychological states over time.

The work's pieces can be arranged together in a collective experience that makes connections within the work and its environment; or they can be experienced individually, perhaps relating to another understanding of unique singularity within a broader context.
